How to Make a Flower Crown for Imbolc, the Portal of Spring

This year in the Southern Hemisphere the Portal of Spring falls on the 7th of August. Known in the Celtic calendar as Imbolc, its a celebration of fertility as the earth reawakens from her winter sleep.

As Mama Earth begins to warm, and the flowers to bloom, spring is the perfect time to get creative with flower crowns.

Not only are they a beautiful way to celebrate the season, they also allow us to connect to our inner goddess, honouring Mama Earth and the beauty she has bestowed on us.

In this post, I'll show you how to make your own stunning flower crowns using fresh flowers, greenery, and a few simple supplies.

Materials Needed:

  • Fresh flowers. Choose seasonal blooms that grow in abundance around you. I love tea tree blossoms, dandelions and marigolds interspersed with some gypsophila

  • Sprigs of leaves that are hardy and won't wilt such as camellia

  • Wild vines or reeds that you can bend and shape to make your crown.

  • Plant cutters

  • Optional: gum nuts, seeds, crystals, beads or anything else that calls to you 🌼

Step 1: Prepare Your Flowers

Before you start creating your crown, prepare your flowers by trimming the stems to about 5 cm's long. Remove any leaves that will be below the bloom, as these can wilt and make the crown look messy.

Step 2: Create Your Base

Before you start place your vines or reeds in water to make them flexible. Then begin braiding them together into a circle. Interweaving them leaving gaps to poke the flowers through.

Step 3: Add Your First Flowers

Get creative! Begin weaving your flowers into the crown in whatever way is pleasing to you.

Step 4: Add Greenery and Filler Flowers

To add some texture and depth to your crown, use sprigs of greenery like camellia or ferns. You can also use small filler flowers like baby's breath to fill in any gaps and add volume.

Step 5: Secure Your Crown

Once you've added all of your flowers and greenery, check and secure any stray stems or ends that may dig into you. Make sure everything is firmly attached and won't come loose while wearing.

Step 6: Add a Finishing Touch

To give your crown an extra special touch, you may wish to add some other decorative elements like ribbons, beads, or crystals.

Flower crowns look gorgeous and make a fun activity to do at your women's circle.

You can mix up the flowers or even make one with berry's and bare branches to celebrate the winter season.
